Travis looks a bit sullen from the admonishment. "I'm gonna go find out, and I'll be back! Thanks a lot mister!"
Travis then asks for directions to the gym, and heads that way.
When he arrives, he'll speak to whomever greets him at the door. "Excuse me. I stopped by the Pokemart and he told me that if I was looking for TMs, I should stop by the gym and ask the Leader where he gets his. I know he's busy, but I'm hoping I can have a moment of his time."

When you arrive at the Gym, you see a line of about 25 people at the door. (Are you still going straight to the door?)

If there is someone outside greeting people, and it is possible to approach from the side, yes.

As you approach the door, a vast amount of indignant yelling erupts from the line. The person closest to the door grabs you by the shirt collar and retrieves one of her PokeBalls. "You'd best wait in line like the rest of us, punk, unless you're lookin' to get your rear end kicked before even facing the Gym Leaders."

Travis lifts his arms up. "I'm not here to challenge the gym leader! I just want to ask where in Gemini city I can go to buy TM's!"
If answers are not immediately forthcoming by the bystanders who overheard him, he will ask these trainers repeatedly down the line, tapping into his Telepathy to get the answer he needs.

The girl releases you. "Well, that depends on the kind of TMs you're lookin' for."

"I'm just starting out, so I'm sure I can't afford anything fancy. Maybe a Karate Chop, Mach Punch, Rock Smash, something like that? A Fighting physical attack? My Meditite here is pretty young, but he's got a lot of potential to be a good fighter!"

(Metagame wise, I just want an At-will fighting attack Meditite can use till he gains 12 more levels and gets his first physical attack. Karate Chop or Mach Punch would be great. Rock Smash looks like it is unfortunately an EOT attack, which is less than ideal)

(I understand. You've told me SEVERAL times. As you'll find, that's not exactly the question the Trainer is asking you.) "Yeah yeah kid whatever. You're looking for cheap? Or are you looking for quality?"

(Sorry. It has been a while since I clarified what I was looking for, and I figured it is better to err on the side of too much information.)
"I don't really know what the prices of TM's are, so I don't know what I can afford. Maybe they aren't as expensive as I think? So, both?"
(I'm trying not to metagame everything. Even though my character has a high INT and is likely well read on TM's, he likely doesn't have the TM price guide memorized, although it is hard for me to tell what my character should and shouldn't know.)

"Wake up kiddo. I'm asking if you want something that won't break the bank but is sold by a reputable source, or something that is cheap enough that someone of your caliber could afford but from someone a little... less well-known."

"I don't mind supporting small businesses. Heaven knows it is frightening the monopoly Pokemart seems to have worldwide."
"Do these TM's work just as well as 'the real deal?'"

The girl shrugs. "Well enough."

"Well then yes, if you could point me in that direction, I'd be very appreciative."

Travis also uses Telepathy on her to get her meaning when she says "Well enough"
