Designing encounters for PTA can be rather difficult at times. It is rather difficult to grasp the strength of the party and at low levels fights tend to end quickly due to high db. I myself nearly wiped out a party with a gaggle of Ducklett. As to why db are so different, I could only guess that it is to help combat scaling of health per level but also the db of some moves was changed for better balancing to ensure that types were a bit more equal.

@covert Additionally by RAW you are only supposed to roll once for AOE moves' AC and damage. Some DMs change that to make it less likely for Sing to decimate parties. Did Tom get lost somewhere in the shuffle or did I miss a cue?

Even without the critical damage (assuming you take the 1st roll of 16) it would of still been a wipe. Even if balancing is an issue, using Uproar when other attacks are available is always a choice (like Tackle, which Basculin defiantly has). Using a 3d12+14 AOE move on such low level pokemon grantees the battle to be over, and how can a battle be fun when you functionally become a spectator, which is basically my main gripe with this all

You did pick a fight with a sailor who presumably has several years of training under his belt. That really is the way low level battles function though at the same time that uproar should also have hit the Carvahana as well. Friendly fire is on. Still at least getting a move in would have been preferable.

Oh I don't have a problem with the reason for the fight or that they lost the fight, its was just the way it was done.
Could of went, pick your two pokemon, cool, ko them and you lose the fight and saved the die rolls for the same effect. Cause thats almost how it went down, actually if the Carvanha was just a  little bit faster thats exactly how it would of turned out

I have been randomly generating the encounters via a different site, and yeah, Uproar probably hit the Carvahna, so I can roll that if you like.
However, Trainer battles are generally at higher levels than your encounters- Pepper and Bonnie were at level 10 and the Basculin and Carvahna were at 10 and 11, respectively.

It mainly was just that neither of are pokemon were very bulky. Bonnie has no health until Honchkrow, and I am sure the other pokemon was the same.

Carvanha had 32 HP and I think Basculin had 37? Like it was said earlier, early fights are really a pain in the butt

it also has to know either Sleep Powder or Hypnosis since Nightmare and Dream Eater dont work

Oh, it's ability is that it puts the target to sleep if it drains them.
