I still do not like Mega's. I think there should be a fourth evolution instead. Evolving for every fight was Digimon's thing, and that was because pokemon would not allow Digimon to have permanent evolutions. And then pokemon goes and makes Mega's... Fourth evolution state would be so much more organic, plus it would allow Pokemon to have something that it has been missing for quite a long time: Late game play (Level 70+)

What about Pokémon like Salamence and Haxorus who all evolve at freakishly high levels already?

Freakishly high? The highest evolution level requirement is like 66, and thats on the full evolution of dieno. There are 44 more levels to go before you reach the cap. High Level requirements evolution would simply evolve in the 80s or 90s. Most could be in the 60s or 70s.

The issue with late game evolving is a game length and formula.

I'm guessing most players stop around the area of the elite 4 and the main 'ending' of the game. Aka the early 60 range

So to have these cool Mon you can't play till post game is not a good way to reward players.

Megas are odd, to be sure, but they make more game sense than late evolutions. (Pokemon is already a huge time sink)

Thing is, as a casual player, I usually restart pokemon games to replay the story. Two or three times between game releases. Does this mean everyone does it? No. But I know a few people that do that. I also know people who aim to catch all the pokemon in the game. And I know people who play pokemon for the competitive aspect of it. The point is that pokemon is a timesink, but it allows you to sink your time in it in different ways. If you focus purely on gameplay and nothing else, tackling gym after gym and not worrying about grinding pokemon or catching a Abra or pseudo-legendary, you would breeze through the storyline in no time.

And the thing about pokemon being a timesink is that one reason why so many people like the game. If you wanted a hour long story(if that) and just wanted to focus on gameplay, then there are other games for you like the Modern Warfare series or a Streetfighter game. Pokémon is more about raising a team and being part of the story.

The reason most players stop at level 60s is because there usually nothing beyond that range. The story usually stops there, and if it doesn't it continues on for only a short time, and then most trainers you can face after the elite four soon run out too. Now, if they were to continue the story or add a second, smaller story about the player being the champ and actively doing stuff along with more trainers, then a lot of people would continue playing. And it would also open up the area for later evolutions, of which most pokemon would evolve in the 60s or early 70s which is the levels where the game usually ends.

But that is my opinion. Megas have their place in Pokémon, but it is not something that I like.
